Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas fell victim to a walk-off after failing to bolster a solid pitching performance from Gabe Mosser. The 28-year-old righty threw seven innings of one-run ball in his longest and arguably best start of the 2024 season. The 2018 27th-round pick is 6-6 with a 5.50 ERA in 108 innings, which ties his career high from back in 2019. … Tom Cosgrove took the baton next and OKC loaded the bases against him on a bunt single, a walk, and then following a double steal, an intentional walk. He then worked his way out of the jam with a strikeout and grounder to keep the Dodgers’ affiliate off the board. The veteran lefty has struggled with health and effectiveness in 2024, but has thrown nine scoreless innings in August. … The lone El Paso run came courtesy of Eguy Rosario, who hit his 17th home run of the season. The Chihuahuas infielder, who some fans are dismayed is not getting another shot with the injury-depleted Padres, is batting .260 with a .905 OPS in the 2024 season. However, the infielder has struggled mightily in August. The home raised his August OPS to .585 … Brett Sullivan went 1-for-4 as the veteran catcher tries to turn around a slow August in which he is batting .183. The former big leaguer has struggled this year against left-handed pitching, hitting just .148 with a .468 OPS. He is batting .283 with a .917 OPS against righties.

Prospect Watch: A pair of Missions showed out against a rehabbing big leaguer, but San Antonio’s rally fell short in Frisco. Miguel Cienfuegos took his seventh loss of the season and first since joining the Missions, throwing five innings of three-run ball. The 27-year-old Canadian southpaw was brought in to contribute innings in the middle levels for the Padres, and he’s done just that, throwing 106.1 innings in 23 starts for the 2024 season. … After arriving in Double-A to a decent amount of fanfare and then stumbling with three earned runs allowed in his last outing Sunday, Bradgley Rodriguez got things back on track with five outs of no-hit ball. The 20-year-old righty struck out two and walked one. He owns a 2.75 ERA and has struck out 28.9% of the batters he has faced in 52.1 innings across three levels in 2024. … Cole Cummings got it done in the leadoff spot, slugging a double off rehabbing Jacob deGrom to get things started for the Missions. The 27-year-old outfielder is slashing .262/.332/.461 in games away from the power-sapping Wolff Stadium. … Connor Hollis drove in Cumming with a single to give the Missions the lead against the Rangers’ star righty, who then locked in and set the next six hitters down in order. Hollis, an Arlington native and University of Houston alum, later added a two-run single and is batting .284 in 74 August at-bats.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps rallied back from an early deficit only to see the game slip away in the late innings, and eventually extras. The club has lost eight games in a row. …  Enmanuel Pinales was charged with a pair of unearned runs among the three he surrendered in five innings of work, but struck out seven and only allowed one walk. The 23-year-old Dominican righty has enjoyed a solid season in Fort Wayne, posting a 3.73 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 99 innings. After a pair of spotty starts coming out of the All-Star break, Pinales has settled in and posted a 3.00 ERA while going five innings each in three straight starts, posting an encouraging 19:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio along the way. … Dwayne Matos was impressive out of the bullpen, throwing two innings of one-hit ball. The 23-year-old righty needed the outing to turn around a challenging month in which he now owns an 8.64 ERA after posting a 1.00 mark in July. … Ethan Salas collected his ninth double of the month as part of a 2-for-5 night is now batting .207 on the year. The Padres’ top prospect has now hit in seven straight and reached base in 15 consecutive contests. He owns a .786 OPS in August, his first calendar month with a mark above .700 this season. … Tyler Robertson also went 2-for-5 and stole a base in his third game since returning from missing seven weeks because of a hamate injury. The 24-year-old outfielder is batting .242 with five home runs in 182 at-bats for the Tincaps on the year.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes 9, Storm 2

Key Statistics: RHP Maikel Miralles 5 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K, HBP; LHP Braian Salazar 1.1 IP, 1 H, 4 R (2 ER), 2 K, 3 BB, HBP; 1B Lamar King Jr. 1-for-3, 2B, RBI, BB; 2B Brandon Butterworth 1-for-4, 2B; CF Kai Roberts 2-for-4, 3B, R

Prospect Watch: Though the Storm watched their hopes slip away in a big way in the late innings, they got some standout performances from some fresh faces. On the mound, Maikel Miralles turned in five innings of three-hit ball, allowing no runs while striking out five. The 19-year-old righty hadn’t gone more than three innings in his first 23 appearances for the Complex League club and Lake Elsinore, but has worked five in back-to-back starts after moving into the rotation. The Venezuela native has posted a 4.67 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 44.1 innings in his first season stateside. … At the plate, Lamar King Jr. slugged a double and drove in a run. The 20-year-old owns an .832 OPS in 55 at-bats since beginning his first run of full-season ball after spending all of 2022 and 2023, as well as the bulk of 2024 in the Arizona Complex League. The strong right-handed hitter has seen his power production climb significantly as he gets further removed from last winter’s shoulder surgery. … New arrival Brandon Butterworth, a 12th round pick out of North Carolina State, continues to hit, delivering another double. The 21-year-old infielder is batting .283 in his first 53 at-bats of professional baseball. … 6-foot-5 center fielder Kai Roberts impressed in the leadoff spot, going 2-for-4, including his second triple since the Padres selected him out of the University of Utah in the seventh round last month. The lanky left-handed hitter is batting .304 in his first 56 at-bats in the Padres organization.
